Rate Checklist

A rate is only as accurate as the details behind it. Check off each item as you gather it, and you will be ready to ask licensed insurers or agents for quotes you can rely on.

Your checklist

Check each item once you have it in hand. If an item does not apply to you, such as lender details for a car you own outright, check it off anyway.

How to use this checklist

Work through the list at your own pace and check each item as you gather it. The progress bar and the group totals show what is left, and the panel tells you which group to tackle next. Your checks stay on this page only: nothing is sent anywhere or saved, so the boxes clear when you reload.

If you would like a paper copy to fill in by hand or keep with your documents, use your browser's print command (Ctrl+P, or Cmd+P on a Mac).

Why it pays to be prepared

A quote is an estimate based on what you tell the insurer or agent. Before a policy is issued, insurers typically check details such as driving records, claims history and vehicle information. If what you said at the start does not match, the price can change, sometimes after you have already decided to switch.

Having the facts ready also makes your comparison fair. When every insurer or agent prices the same drivers, the same cars and the same coverage, the difference between quotes reflects the companies, not the information you gave them. And it simply saves time, whether you are filling in an online form or talking with an agent.

Where to find what you need

ItemWhere to look
VINThe dashboard near the base of the windshield on the driver's side, the driver's door jamb, your registration, the title or your insurance card
Declarations pageYour insurer's website or app, your most recent renewal packet, or your agent
Driving recordYour state motor vehicle agency. Many offer copies online or by mail, sometimes for a fee
Lender or leasing companyYour loan or lease contract, or a recent statement
MileageThe odometer, service receipts or inspection reports
Past claimsClaim letters or emails, or ask your current insurer or agent

Tips for asking for rates

  • Be complete and accurate. Leaving out a household driver, a ticket or how a car is used can lead to a higher price later and may cause problems if you file a claim.
  • Ask for the same coverage everywhere. Use your declarations page as the model, then ask for one or two variations, such as higher liability limits or a different deductible.
  • Ask which discounts apply. Ask what each insurer needs to verify them. Our Available Discounts guide lists common ones.
  • Get the full price. Ask for the total premium for the term and any installment or policy fees, so you can compare the real cost.

This checklist is general information. Insurers and agents may ask for different or additional details, and requirements vary by state. It is not a quote and not advice about your policy, and AutoAssures.com is not an insurance company.
